What does it mean if a whiskey is said to be triple distilled and how does triple distilled whiskey really differ from whiskey that has only undergone the process twice?
Despite whiskey being made from very few simple ingredients, the means by which these ingredients are transformed from their natural state into the smooth and warming spirit that we all know and love is, in fact, quite technical and complicated.
In very simple terms, the heady liquid obtained after mashing the ingredients together is then mixed with the fermenting agent, yeast.
As this bubbling mixture is allowed to settle – usually for about 60 hours – the alcohol is slowly extracted from the sugars, resulting in a highly potent liquid, called “wash”.
