About this Cocktail

A guide to making an Old Fashioned that never goes out of style. As you can guess by its name, this is one of the very first whiskey cocktails ever invented. Although its origin is not certain, the Old-Fashioned could have been invented by the bartender Martin Cuneo at the “Pendennis Club” in Louisville, Kentucky in 1884. Almost 150 years after, the Old Fashioned is the #1 Cocktail in the World and a perfect way to drink your Jameson Black Barrel.

Old Fashioned FAQs

Why is it called an Old Fashioned?

The name is shorthand for “old fashioned style whiskey cocktail” which in the 1800s meant any mix of whiskey, sweeteners and bitters.

What is the best whiskey for an old fashioned?

A smooth Irish whiskey like Jameson Black Barrel is the perfect base for an Irish old fashioned.

What are the best bitters for an old fashioned?

A couple dashes of Angostura Bitters and Orange Bitters are the best choice for an Old Fashioned cocktail.

Why do they add orange peel to Old Fashioned?

Garnishing an old fashioned with an orange peel or “twist” allows the oils from the peel to release into the drink and elevate the cocktail’s flavours further.

Do you shake or stir an Old Fashioned?

The best way to make an Old Fashioned is to stir it in a glass or jug of ice. You shouldn’t shake an Old Fashioned as it can dilute the cocktail too quickly.

What type of glassware should I use to serve an Old Fashioned?

An Old Fashioned glass, also known as a rocks glass or tumbler, is the ideal choice. Its sturdy, short design accommodates the muddled ingredients and large ice cube, allowing you to fully appreciate the drink’s aromas and flavours.

Is the Old Fashioned a strong cocktail?

Yes, the Old Fashioned is known for its bold and robust flavours, often featuring a hearty pour of whiskey. However, you can adjust the whiskey quantity to your preference, tailoring the strength of the cocktail to your taste.

What food pairings go well with an Old Fashioned?

The Old Fashioned’s rich and complex profile makes it an excellent match for savoury and hearty dishes. Consider pairing it with charcuterie, grilled meats, aged cheeses, or even dark chocolate for a delightful culinary experience.

Can I use different types of sweeteners in an Old Fashioned?

Absolutely! While traditional recipes call for sugar cubes, you can experiment with various sweeteners like simple syrup, honey, or maple syrup. Each option brings its own unique flavour profile to the cocktail.
